An ethogram is a structured catalog of observable behaviors used in animal-behavior research. VeriBark's canine ethogram organizes communication signals so the app can connect what appears in a video with relevant behavioral knowledge.

The current ethogram is informed by 621 studies and contains 133 communication signals. The knowledge base draws from canine behavior, cognition, stress, facial-action coding and communication research, among other areas.

In our current internal evaluation using labeled training videos, VeriBark's interpretations align with the expected assessment approximately 83% of the time. This is an early performance indicator, not a guarantee for every video, and it may change as we expand the dataset, gather additional expert feedback and continue improving the system. Dog behavior is contextual, and video quality, visibility, sound and the information provided can all affect an analysis.

VeriBark is designed for dogs across breeds and life stages, but morphology can affect how signals appear. Ear shape, tail type, coat and facial structure can make some cues more or less visible.

Sound can add useful information because vocalizations are one of the channels VeriBark analyzes. A silent clip can still contain useful visual signals, but including clear audio may give the system more context.

VeriBark is currently built specifically for dogs. Cat Chat and Hey Horse are our planned species-specific experiences, and we aim to expand to birds and farmed animals as well. Each experience will be developed around an appropriate species-specific evidence base rather than applying the dog model to every animal.
